Frequently Asked Questions
What COVID precautions do you have in place in your clinic?
I maintain a COVID-19 Safety Plan which includes very high standards of hygiene, including air purification with HEPA filter, and changing and / or disinfection of all surfaces between clients. I ask that anyone currently experiencing cold or flu like symptoms or who have or had contact with COVID to not come in until all parties are fully recovered. Hand sanitizer is provided.
What is your cancellation policy?
I require 24 hours’ notice of cancellation wherever possible, which gives someone else the opportunity to take that appointment. In the event that you cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice, a cancellation fee may apply if I am unable to fill your allotted time.
Do you offer pregnancy massage?
Yes, provided your pregnancy is progressing normally and you are in good health I do offer pregnancy massage. Feel free to call me prior if you would like to discuss any concerns.
What is Myofascial Release and Myofascial Cupping?
Myo (meaning muscle) and Fascia – relates to the connective tissue integral to and surrounding the muscles. The fascia plays many roles in the body and if compromised can affect posture, increase risk of injury, and delay recovery from injury, so maintaining the integrity of this tissue is vital to maintaining or restoring optimal muscular- skeletal health. This is done through Myofascial release.
The method of Myofascial release I prefer is by applying suction cups. The suction increases blood flow through the tissue and lifts and separates tissue layers. As the cups are glided gently over the tissue, fascial adhesions are released, relieving pain, relaxing the muscles and promoting tissue repair and the release of metabolic wastes which contribute to pain.
What does Myofascial cupping feel like, and will I bruise?
Most people experience a mild prickling sensation, which can range from soothing to mildly uncomfortable, and I can adjust it to suit you. The result is increased mobility and flexibility and decreased pain.
This technique does not result in the big circular bruises which occur with very deep cupping combined with parking the cups for a longer duration.
What should I expect in my appointment?
I believe in giving you the information you need to be able to maintain a pain and injury free lifestyle as far as possible, so I’ll teach you about your condition and any contributing factors and how to remedy them with simple exercises and or lifestyle changes.
I prefer to work closely with other Allied Health Practitioners so in the event that I feel you need help from a podiatrist, chiro, osteo or physio I will make that recommendation to ensure you are receiving the most appropriate care.
Most appointments are 1 hour in duration. I.5-hour appointments are occasionally available, but it is recommended that you book well in advance.
On your first appointment I will take your medical history, so I am aware of any possible contra-indications to treatment. I will also make some visual and functional assessments, which will inform how I approach your treatment. Normally this takes 10 to 15 mins on your first session but may be longer depending on the complexity of your condition.
After making some recommendations and with your consent, I will work with a variety of techniques depending on what I feel will work best for you. This will consider your physical and emotional state.
Every treatment is tailored to meet your needs on any given day. Massage is integral to my treatments, but I employ other modalities within the treatment as required, often seamlessly so you may not even be aware of them.
At the end of your treatment, I will recommend a treatment plan to help to manage or resolve your condition, to help you towards self - maintenance for the long term, so that you will not need to keep returning for therapy.
Subsequent appointments will include a review of your progress, usually a quicker consultation so more hands- on treatment, and then any necessary amendments to your homework to keep your progress on track.
How do I know if I need a treatment?
If you have a pain or injury which persists longer than 3 days, or recurs, then treatment is recommended.
Do you treat children?
Yes, my youngest client is 5 years old. Of course, it will be necessary for a parent to remain present during the treatment.
